Ujima Project Manager

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, an arm of Center for Public Integrity, is seeking an experienced project manager with computer-assisted reporting and database skills to lead the Ujima project. Ujima is a series of easy-to-use Web portals and databases that give outgunned and understaffed international news media unprecedented access to data on health, international aid, arms sales, and more. We see Ujima as a game-changer – a unique chance to give journalists in developing countries a direct line to some of the world’s most useful public records. The project manager will lead efforts to expand Ujima worldwide, with sites in Africa, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and other regions. Additional duties include identifying and preparing data for the Web sites, helping develop the sites, and training local journalists who host and use the data. The job involves some international travel. This is a one-year appointment, which has potential renewal for multiple years.

Candidates need strong computer-assisted reporting skills, including experience in identifying, acquiring and scraping data; and in managing and cleaning data in MySQL;. Knowledge of Python and Django is a plus, as is experience in Website development and in teaching CAR. In addition, candidates must be able to coordinate with international journalists, programmers, and Web hosting companies in meeting Ujima’s mission.

We are located in downtown Washington, D.C., with easy subway access. Salary is competitive with an excellent benefits package.
