GLOBAL INTEGRITY began as the Global Access project at the Center for Public Integrity in 1999, an effort to track governance and corruption trends around the world by working with on-the-ground journalists and social scientists. In 2005 the project spun off as a separate organization and has carried out its award-winning fieldwork in nearly 90 countries with a team of more than 650 local journalists and researchers. THE FUND FOR INDEPENDENCE IN JOURNALISM, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, tax exempt organization, was created in 2003 to foster independent, high quality public service journalism in the United States and around the world. The Fund’s primary purpose is to provide legal defense and endowment support for the Center for Public Integrity and possibly other similar groups. This core mission illuminates the fundamental role of the press, the public’s right to know, and accountability in a democratic society.
