The Daily Watchdog: April 9, 2009

By Peter Newbatt Smith | April 09, 2009, 7:00 am

A daily roundup of just-released investigative reports, drawn from oversight agencies, congressional committees, and government offices across Washington.

FINANCIAL STABILIZATION: “Assessing Treasury’s Strategy: Six Months of TARP” (TARP Congressional Oversight Panel). Examines the Treasury Department’s current strategy for stabilizing the financial system, the progress it has made, and potential policy alternatives.

IRAQ: “A Review of U.S. Policy Relative to Petroleum-Sector Contracting in Iraq,” (State Department’s Inspector General). In response to several senators’ concerns about Dallas-based Hunt Oil’s receiving an oil exploration contract from the Kurdish Regional Government in Iraq, this review finds that U.S. government policy on such contracts was “ambiguously articulated.” A summary of this report was publicly released in March.

FINANCIAL REGULATION: “Safety and Soundness: Material Loss Review of Ameribank, Inc.” (Treasury Department’s Inspector General). Concludes that Treasury’ Office of Thrift Supervision should have given “more careful and earlier attention to address Ameribank’s rapid growth in high-risk concentrations.” OTS closed West Virginia-based Ameribank in September 2008.

FEDERAL BUDGET: “Monthly Budget Review” (Congressional Budget Office).

FINANCIAL CONTROLS: “DoD Components’ Use of Global War on Terror Supplemental Funding Provided for Procurement and Research, Development, Test, and Evaluation” (Defense Department’s Inspector General).

FINANCIAL CONTROLS: “Controls Over Air Force Materiel Command Unliquidated Obligations on Department of the Air Force Contracts Supporting the Global War on Terror” (Defense Department’s Inspector General).
