The Daily Watchdog: May 11, 2009

A daily roundup of just-released investigative reports, drawn from oversight agencies, congressional committees, and government offices across Washington.

INFORMATION SECURITY: “Internal Controls over Accountable Classified Removable Electronic Media at Oak Ridge National Laboratory” (Energy Department’s Inspector General). A review at ORNL found that some procedures for securing devices with sensitive data were not properly followed.

INFORMATION SECURITY: “Evaluation of the Department of the Interiors Accountability of Desktop and Laptop Computers and their Sensitive Data” (Interior Department’s Inspector General). Finds that the Department, “as a whole, could not account for the computers purchased, as there is no uniform policy for the tracking and chain of custody of portable computer equipment.”

INSPECTORS GENERAL: “Statutory Authorities to Prohibit Inspector General Activities” (Government Accountability Office).

CRIMINAL JUSTICE: “Evaluation of the Use of Performance Information in the Bureau of Indian Affairs Office of Justice Services” (Interior Department’s Inspector General).

TRANSPORTATION: “Aviation Industry Performance: A Review of the Aviation Industry in 2008” (Transportation Department’s Inspector General).

FINANCIAL CONTROLS: “Financial Management Systems: OMB’s Financial Management Line of Business Initiative Continues but Future Success Remains Uncertain” (Government Accountability Office).
