The Daily Watchdog: June 16, 2009

By Peter Newbatt Smith | June 16, 2009, 7:00 am

A daily roundup of just-released investigative reports, drawn from oversight agencies, congressional committees, and government offices across Washington.

MILITARY PROCUREMENT: “Review of Defense Contract Management Agency Support of the C-130J Aircraft Program” (Defense Department’s Inspector General). “In response to an allegation of inappropriate Air Force influence,” this review “found no evidence to suggest that the Air Force or the prime contractor exerted inappropriate influence over DCMA.”

TAX ADMINISTRATION: “Tax Gap: Requiring Information Reporting for Charitable Cash Contributions May Not Be an Effective Way to Improve Compliance” (Government Accountability Office). Finds that requiring charities to report contributions to the IRS might reduce misreporting by taxpayers, but that “charities could incur substantial costs and burdens” from such a requirement.

TAX ADMINISTRATION: “Analyzing Taxpayer Errors Can Help to Improve Forms and Instructions” (Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration).

HOMELAND SECURITY: “CBP Could Improve Its Estimation of Funding Needed for New Border Patrol Agents” (Government Accountability Office).

VETERANS AFFAIRS: Implementation of Temporary Residence Adaptation Grants” (Government Accountability Office).
