    MONEY & POLITICS: Remembering Rep. John P “Jack” Murtha

    Yesterday marked the passing of one of Washington’s most powerful and controversial legislators, one whose work was familiar to followers of the Center for Public Integrity. Pennsylvania Democrat John P. “Jack” Murtha, chairman of the House Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, died Monday afternoon at the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, VA, according to a statement from his congressional office.     MONEY & POLITICS: Leaked Document Reveals Six “Murtha Method” Reps. Under Investigation

    Seven members of a powerful subcommittee that was the subject of a recent Center investigation are now being scrutinized by the House ethics committee, according to The Washington Post. The paper also reports that they are among more than 30 lawmakers being scrutinized for ethics violations, according to a leaked confidential document. Read more

    ACCOUNTABILITY: Pentagon: We’re Trying to Break “The Iron Triangle”

    Secretary of Defense Robert Gates is “trying to break that tight bond between” the “iron triangle of Congress and industry and the bureaucracy in” the Pentagon — which the Center highlighted in its story “The Murtha Method” — according to a Defense Department press secretary. The spokesman was reacting to a question about the Center’s investigation at yesterday’s press briefing. Read more

    ACCOUNTABILITY: DOD Officials Junket to Johnstown

    The Center’s recent investigative report, Pentagon Travel, revealed that over a decade’s time, Defense Department employees took thousands of trips paid for by outside sources. Turns out a handful of those trips were to Johnstown, Pennsylvania, a former coal and steel mining town of some 27,000 people that’s been getting plenty of attention — from both DOD personnel and federal law enforcement officials.     POLITICS: PMA Group ‘Excel’s at Access to Murtha, Document Shows

    It’s the end of an era for Paul Magliocchetti and his lobbying shop, the PMA Group. After 20 years of existence, the firm is closing down next week in the wake of federal law enforcement raids of its office and Magliocchetti’s home in the course of an investigation into whether it wielded inappropriate influence on Capitol Hill, especially in regard to the defense appropriations process. A curious document obtained by PaperTrail appears to show the degree of coziness between the PMA Group and the House defense appropriations subcommittee — it seems that PMA’s access exceeded that of even many in Congress.
