    STATES: Ethics News in New Jersey, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Mississippi

    There’s been movement on the ethics front in at least five states since the Center released its States of Disclosure rankings back in late June. Most legislatures aren’t in session, but there are nevertheless new developments regarding ethics legislation and financial disclosure rules in New Jersey, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Mississippi.     POLITICS: New Study Shows Campaign Money Affects Judicial Decisions

    PaperTrail has some homework for Supreme Court justices, regarding Caperton v. Massey, a case they heard arguments for yesterday. A recent study looks at the connections between campaign contributions and judicial decisions, which is at the heart of the case. The results, in case they don’t have time to read the full report, show that contributions do indeed appear, in some cases, to influence decisions. Read more

    ENVIRONMENT: Top Ten Coal Ash States

    Coal ash — the often toxic solid waste generated by burning coal for electricity, and the focus of a recent Center investigation — has largely been viewed as a regional problem, limited to the coal-heavy eastern United States. Indeed, the Center’s map of 194 ash landfills and 161 ash ponds seems concentrated up and down the East Coast. But it turns out it’s a mistake to view the issue through a regional lens. Read more
