The Mexico City-based organization, which is affiliated with Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE) of the United States, works with journalists throughout Latin America. Armendares is a former investigative reporter for the Mexico City daily newspaper La Jornada and has contributed to other Mexican and international media. He also worked as independent correspondent in Mexico for the Latin American service of the BBC and Public Radio International. While at La Jornada, Armendares covered international and U.S.-Mexican affairs, including immigration, NAFTA, and the “drug wars.” He is a frequent participant in journalism workshops and seminars and teaches investigative journalism at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City. Armendares has also taught at the International Studies Division of the Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas (CIDE), as well as at the University of California’s Mexico City Study Center, the University of California in Santa Cruz and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Armendares has a bachelor’s degree in history from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and a master’s in international journalism from the University of Southern California. He is currently researching the tobacco industry in Mexico and is also assisting one of Mexico’s television networks with developing their investigative reporting.
