Ying Chan, Hong Kong/United States, has returned to Asia to develop and direct a journalism curriculum at Hong Kong University.

Prior to that, she was a New York-based independent journalist and contributing editor for Yazhou Zhoukan (Asia Weekly), an international Chinese-language weekly. From 1990 to 1997, she worked for the New York Daily News, where she won a Polk Award for reporting on the human-smuggling trade from China. The Hong Kong-born Chan was one of the first journalists to investigate campaign finance links between Asia and the Clinton re-election campaign. Her reporting triggered a lawsuit by a senior official of Taiwan’s ruling party. For her battle against the suit, she was awarded a 1997 International Press Freedom Award by the Committee to Protect Journalists. Chan was a 1996 Nieman journalism fellow at Harvard.
