She has distinguished herself writing dispassionate, critical stories of the government of President Daniel arap Moi. In 1992, her tough, independent reporting was honored with a Courage in Journalism Award from the International Women’s Media Foundation, which cited her exposé on the involvement of senior government officials in the embezzlement of funds from the country’s national pension fund. Gicheru also investigated the involvement of Kenyan government officials in the assassination of a local political figure. She was a Nieman fellow at Harvard University in 1989.
