Georg Mascolo, Germany

Since joining the magazine in 1992, Mascolo has helped investigate cases of weapons and plutonium smuggling and other intelligence issues. In 1995, Mascolo investigated the activities of the Iranian secret service in Germany and exposed the German government’s knowledge of it. In January 1999, Mascolo uncovered the failure of the Bundesnachrichtendienst, Germany’s main intelligence service, to stop the export to Libya of materials used in making chemical weapons, despite advance knowledge of various transaction details. He has also examined American pressure on the German government to return top secret U.S. documents stolen by the East German Stasi intelligence service during the Cold War. Previously, Mascolo was a screenwriter for Spiegel TV.
