How To File a Freedom of Information Request

If you are interested in performing your own land-use research, you may want to file a freedom of information (FOI) request with local, state, or federal authorities.

The federal government and all 50 states have established “sunshine” laws permitting public access to government documents. Access regulations vary from state to state, and there are limits on what governments will release.

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press offers an easy-to-use FOI Letter Generator. The guide can determine whether the information sought is likely to be made available under applicable laws and will take you through a few simple steps to create a formal request letter.
