The Center for Public Integrity

Investigations Investigations

Following up on our two previous analyses in 1999 and 2006, the Center for Public Integrity’s latest financial disclosure rankings for state legislators found that 20 out of the 50 states received a failing grade and three of those states have no disclosure requirements at all.

Key Findings:

  • The Center found Louisiana to be the most improved state for legislative financial disclosure requirements due to a sweeping ethics reform enacted by Governor Bobby Jindal. Louisiana’s new requirements made it the number one state on the Center’s list this year, a huge improvement over its 44th place in 2006.
  • Mississippi was this year’s second-most improved state, having jumped 10 spots on the list from number 34 to 24.
  • But 20 states received failing grades by the survey’s standards, a minor improvement over the 24 states that failed in 2006. Three states – Michigan, Idaho, and Vermont – tied for last place as they have no disclosure laws.
