How telecom fights municipal broadband

Large telecommunications companies have bankrolled campaigns to try to defeat referendums that would allow cities to build or expand their own high-speed broadband networks. Here are some examples of the newspaper ads, push polls, robocalls and direct-mail brochures telecom companies used in Batavia, Illinois’ 2003 referendum, Lafayette, Louisiana’s 2005 local election, and referendums held in 2009 and 2011 in Longmont, Colorado.
