Key findings from our investigation into nursing home HUD loans
- Hundreds of nursing homes with the lowest possible federal quality ratings have received HUD-guaranteed mortgages since 2009.
- Ohio had the largest number of such homes, 30; Illinois, with 20, was second. California was third.
- For-profit corporations were overrepresented among the owners of poorly rated homes that got HUD-backed mortgages.
- A series of oversight reports stretching back to the mid-1990s have criticized HUD’s stewardship of the mortgage insurance program.
